MMO2615 - Post-medieval ditch or gully east of Knowle Manor (Monument)

An infilled ditch or gully is visible on aerial photographs as a slight earthwork. Its precise date and function are uncertain but it may be associated with the numerous water channels, leats and sluices in this area.

An infilled ditch or gully is visible on aerial photographs as a slight earthwork in a field east of Knowle Manor, Timberscombe. Centred at SS 9631 4290, the ditch runs approximately east to west for some 80 metres. Its precise date and function are uncertain; however, it lies within an area with numerous water channels, leats and sluices, some associated with the saw mill at Knowle (MSO8330), constructed in 1828, and it is possible that this channel is also part of this system. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, suggesting it was abandoned and possibly backfilled by the time of publication, and replaced by the two leats visible to the west (MMO2595).
