Full Description

A shallow pit or quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the western edge of Timberscombe Common, Timberscombe. Centred at SS 9598 4193, the shallow ovoid pit measures approximately 40 metres wide. A second smaller pit is visible some 15 metres east of this pit at SS 9601 4192 and measuring 18 metres wide. The larger of the two pits is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and annotated "old gravel pit" suggesting it was abandoned prior to publication of the map. The smaller pit is also most likely a gravel pit, and both presumably date to the post-medieval period. [1-3]
