MMO2468 - Possible post-medieval gravel pit south of Higher Dumbledeer (Monument)

A small depression or pit is visible as an earthwork. Several post-medieval abandoned gravel pits are depicted in the vicinity on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. This pit may have been abandoned prior to publication of the map.

A small depression or pit is visible as an earthwork on Withycombe Hill, south of Higher Dumbledeer, Withycombe. Centred at ST 0017 4125, the shallow pit measures approximately 20 metres across at its widest point. Several post-medieval abandoned gravel pits are depicted in the vicinity on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, and annotated as "old gravel pit" suggesting they had been abandoned by this point. This pit probably belongs to the same period, abandoned prior to publication of the map in 1888. [1-3]
