Full Description
An oval enclosure is visible as a very slight earthwork close to the summit of Trout Hill, Exmoor. Centred at SS 7886 4250, the enclosure is roughly pear shaped, measuring some 80 metres across at its widest point. It is defined by a low bank approximately 7 metres wide; a gap in the bank on the north side may represent an entranceway. Its precise date and function is uncertain, but its location on a prominent hillspur overlooking Hoccombe Water is reminiscent of prehistoric settlement enclosures seen elsewhere on Exmoor. The enclosure is not visible on photographs taken after 1973 and further survey is required.
