Full Description

A short ditch or trench is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the summit of Little Ashcombe, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7819 4079 the ditch runs east to west and measures approximately 165 metres long by 4 metres wide. Its precise date and function are uncertain, but it most likely dates to the post-medieval period, or possibly even to the 20th Century. It may be part of the land improvement activity by the Knight family which took place in this area from the mid 19th Century onwards; however, it may also be a modern agricultural feature. [1,2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
