MMO2332 - Medieval or post-medieval quarry north of Limecombe Cottage (Monument)

A large medieval or post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork. It is similar in size and form to quarries seen south of Limecombe Cottage which most probably date to the post-medieval period.

A large medieval or post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork north of Limecombe Cottage. Centred at approximately SS 7633 4072, the quarry is cut into the slope above Lime Combe, and measures approximately 23 metres across. It is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it had been abandoned prior to publication in 1889. However, it is similar in size and form to quarries seen south of Limecombe Cottage (see MMO2318 and MMO2319), which are believed to be associated with the Knight family's agricultural improvements in the area, and most probably date to the post-medieval period. The name "Lime Combe" indicates that this area may well have been exploited for limestone.
