Full Description
Two quarries of probable post-medieval date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards. The pits are centred on circa SS 8578 4414 and SS 8575 4414, above Blackford Combe, and are respectively about 16 and 13 metres in diameter. Both are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and annotated as old quarries [3], and had therefore probably passed out of use by this time, an interpretation supported by their generally unaltered size by 1946. [1-4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
