Full Description
Numerous small quarries are visible on aerial photographs cut into the hillside above the River Barle, south of Goat Hill, Exmoor Parish. Centred at approximately SS 7269 4017, ten quarries are visible, ranging in size from 2 to 8 metres across. The quarries are not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting they were abandoned prior to publication in 1890. The location of the quarries alongside the B3358 road suggests they may be associated with construction of the highway; however this is not certain. Another possibility is that they are related to the Knight family's agricultural improvements and building activity in the area during the mid 19th Century.
