Full Description
A medieval or post-medieval extractive pit or quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork in a field to the southeast of Lorna Doone Farm, Parracombe. Centred at approximately SS 6751 4468, the ovoid pit measures approximately 25 metres long and 15 metres wide. It is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it had been abandoned prior to publication in 1889. It is not clear from the aerial photographs what mineral or stone was extracted at this site, and further examination is required. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
