Full Description
A small post-medieval extractive pit or quarry is visible on aerial photographs in enclosed fields to the northwest of Challacombe Common. Centred at approximately SS 6797 4313, the quarry is sub circular, measuring 25 metres long and up to 10 metres wide. It appears deeper at the western end, and may have been partially backfilled. The quarry is not shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, suggesting that it was abandoned prior to publication. It may be related to the enclosure of the moorland in this area, perhaps providing building stone for field boundaries.
