MMO1926 - Undated boundary ditch west of Cowley Wood (Monument)

A substantial cropmark is visible on aerial photographs crossing several fields. It appears to show the location of a large boundary ditch or similar, but its precise date and function are unclear. Further survey is required.

A substantial cropmark is visible on aerial photographs crossing several fields to the west of Cowley Wood, Kentisbury. Centred at approximately SS 6379 4476, the cropmark runs approximately north to south for 75 metres before fading out. At SS 6380 4479, it reappears, running in a southwest to northeast direction (i.e. at 45 degrees to the section mentioned above). This section measures approximately 170 metres long, and curves slightly to the north in places, creating an S shape. Both sections of the cropmark measure between 4 and 8 metres wide. The cropmark appears to show the location of a large boundary ditch or similar, but its precise date and function are unclear. Further survey is required.
