Full Description

A number of medieval or post-medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks on the west slopes of Doverhay Down. Centred at approximately SS 8836 4526, three banks are visible, two running approximately east to west downslope, and one running north to south, along the slope. The southernmost bank, running downslope, measures 165 metres long. The second bank, at SS 8840 4535 runs downslope for 130 metres, where it joins the third bank running along the slope. It then continues downslope for 120 metres. The third bank, which curves along the slope in a north to south direction, measures 200 metres before fading out. All the banks measure between 1.5 and 2.5 metres wide. The boundaries are not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, and it seems likely that they were part of an abandoned attempt to enclose the moor. They were clearly abandoned prior to the publication of the map, but otherwise it is difficult to be more precise regarding date.
