Full Description
A series of possible craters are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Great Hangman Cairn. Centred at SS 6018 4769, up to thirty small craters are visible, none measuring more than 3 metres in diameter. They are mostly aligned approximately east to west, in groups of three or four and uniform in size and depth. These craters are likely to be impact craters related to the Second World War military activity in this area (see MDE8963), particularly at Holdstone Down, 1.5 kilometres to the east, where a number of mortar positions are known to have been situated. [1,2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
