MEM25093 - Late 19th Century quarry on Cosgate Hill (Monument)

A quarry, SS 7911 4878, lies to the south of the main track way just below the crest of Cosgate Hill, at about 340m above OD. The semi-circular feature is 10.6m in length and 7.5m in width, with a maximum depth of 4m and an entrance visible to the south-west. A spoil bank runs round the rim of the quarry with a further bank at its centre standing 0.6m in height. The feature is most probably of late 19th century date. [1] The feature was recorded at 1:2500 scale using GPS equipment as part of an archaeological survey of the Cosgate Hill area. The survey was undertaken by the Exeter office of English Heritage at the request of the Exmoor National Park Authority. A report was compiled as part of the survey work and is available from the NMRC, Swindon. [2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
