Full Description

The name Scatford Pit appears at this location on the 1st edition OS 1:2500 map (c.1890), although no specific feature is depicted to which the term might refer. On the ground this location is now marked by a series of substantial fans of small stones/gravel forming irregular terraces, presumably deposited by heavily season water flows down the slope. It is possible that in the past these terraces were quarried for this stony material giving rise to the placename. [1,2]
