Full Description
A triangulation station is depicted on the summit of Great Hangman at c. SS 6007 4807 but otherwise, no earthwork features are shown. [1] The 1946-8 aerial photographs of the site taken by the Royal Air Force show a cairn at SS 6007 4807. A trackway can be seen running to the cairn from the southwest, which then runs northwards to another darker area at SS 6007 4811. A further trackway then heads west from here to SS 5992 4811, where a further dark area is shown. [2] The cairn and the feature at SS 6007 4811 are still visible on 2013 aerial photographs. [3] The cairn is depicted and labelled on 2018 MasterMap data. [4] The main cairn on Great Hangman may date to the early 20th Century or date from World War Two and, together with the other features described, form part of a military training site or similar.
