Full Description
Three recumbent stones were discovered during restoration work by the Mires Project in October 2016 at SS 80001 42180. These were only partially visible, and were all covered in a thick layer of moss at ground level. The Historic Environment Officer was not fully convinced that they were archaeologically significant but they were recorded due to their proximity to MEM23768. They were located close the edge of a gully which raised suspicion that they might be natural. Stone 1: Recumbent stone. Oriented southeast to northwest. Triangular wedge ending in a point. Wide end higher than the rest and just visible above the ground. 43 centimetres long by 17 centimetres wide. Stone 2: Recumbent stone. Oriented northeast to southwest. Flat, tipping slightly to the east. Not visible above the ground but felt under the moss. 43 centimetres long by 16 centimetres wide. Stone 3: Recumbent stone. Hard to tell the orientation. Top of this was just visible above ground. The stone dipped down so only the top was visible and therefore not sure of its full extent. 25 centimetres long by 12 centimetres wide (full extent unknown). [1,2]
