MEM23655 - Medieval or post-medieval bridge at Exe Bridge (Monument)

A bridge is shown crossing the River Exe at SS 9070 3490 on the Tithe Map for Winsford. [1] The bridge is depicted on the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps and labelled "Exe Bridge". [2,3] The Lynmouth Flood occurred on 15th August 1952 when 9 inches of rain fell on the Exe Plain and the Chains. The pressure of the rush of water down the Exe destroyed the old arched bridge in Howetown Lane, with driftwood, trees and roots blocking the arches. Once the bridge gave way the water level began to subside. [4]
