Full Description

The site is within plot 661 on the Winsford Tithe Map. It is described in the accompanying Apportionment as "Mill House Orchard" and in use as an orchard, owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and occupied by Joan Milton. [1] The building is first depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map at SS 9072 3476, to the southeast of the mill house and within the area of the land labelled "Pitcott Corn Mill". It is orientated northeast to southwest and appears to be an outbuilding for the mill. This arrangement is repeated on later mapping. At some time after the 2nd Edition map was surveyed, the building is renamed Little Pitcott and is converted to residential use. [2-4] Little Pitcott is terraced into the hillslope, presenting a blank single storeyed gable end to Edbrooke Road. It is rendered with a slate roof and brick chimney. [5] Fisher states that Little Pitcott is a mid to late 19th Century building, "which bears sufficient resemblance to Pitt Cottages that they appear to have been built to a pattern by the Acland Estate". However, the image he attributes to Little Pitcott in the report is actually Pitcott House (MEM23605). [6]
