MEM23595 - Pitt Cottage, Winsford (Building)

A probably early 19th Century cottage, rendered with a slate roof. It appears to have been built for the Acland Estate and was owned by them in 1839. The property at one time housed the village Police Station.

Pitt Cottage is depicted on the Tithe Map for Winsford, with what appears to be a slightly larger footprint than shown on later maps and than currently extant. It is within land parcel 616, which was owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and occupied by William Clatworthy and was described as "House and Garden". [1-4] Pitt Cottages are rendered with a slate roof and brick stacks. They have low gabled dormers and timber casement windows and are probably early 19th Century. They are a typical example of 19th Century estate cottages and probably date from the time when Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, an active rural reformer, did much to improve his estates in Somerset and Devon. [5] Winsford had its own village policeman until after the war. The Police Station was at Pitt Cottage before being moved to Greystones in the 1930s. [6]
