MEM23209 - Possible prehistoric clearance cairn on Lanacombe (Monument)

A possible prehistoric clearance cairn was noted during field investigation in 2013. The feature was seen as an area of well defined vegetation change, with some stones visible and more detected by probing. The site is similar to MEM23210.

As part of the Exmoor Mires Project, Cornwall Council Historic Environment Service were contracted to undertake a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Lanacombe, which included this site. Visible was a possible spread clearance cairn 3 to 4 metres in diameter. There is no apparent height to the feature but some stones are visible and probing reveals stone more widely under the thin grass and moss layer which closely defines the extent. The feature is crossed by a footpath and vehicle track. The feature is similar to MEM23210, which is located close to the northwest.
