Full Description

A large area of stones was noted during a non intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. The stones appear in groups and lone, some are standing, some recumbent, with erosion scars, possible packing stones and some are in ditch upcast. One stone group, or possible chambered tomb or cist, was noted set on a small platform. This is comprised of 6 or more large slabs of stone, generally c. 0.15 metres thick by over c. 1 metre across. They are partly supported by a large quartz rich boulder and lie in such a way to indicate a collapsed chamber. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, which included this site. Noted were many surface stones; some appear similar to standing stones, and one natural outcrop with a slab like morphology has acquired a superficial similarity to a chambered tomb through weathering. [2] Several recumbent stones were present on a steep slope. It could be a natural stone, or a standing stone or damaged cist/cairn. The site is not under any significant threat. [3]
