Full Description
The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, which included this site. Noted was a reed filled circular hollow, 1.8 metres in diameter and 0.7 metres deep with a mound on its western side. The feature is most likely a 19th Century prospecting pit. [1] A large scale metric survey of an area of earthworks on Wintershead was undertaken by Hazel Riley in 2012 as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. A reed-filled circular hollow was surveyed, which measures 1.8 metres in diameter, 0.7 metres deep; with a mound on its west side, 1.7 metres long, 1 metre wide and 0.6 metres high. This is probably a mid 19th Century prospection pit for ironstone. [2]
