Full Description
As part of the Exmoor Mires Project, South West Archaeology were contracted to undertake a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Spooners. A mineral exploration hollow was found, sub-rectangular in shape, measuring 4 metres by 2.5 metres. The upcast forms a bank on the downslope side, which measures up to 4 metres wide and is 1.4 metres high. The total area of the earthwork is c. 10 metres by 10 metres. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Spooners, which included this site. The sub-rectangular pit was found to have a maximum dimension of c. 10 metres, with a mound of upcast spoil on the northeastern, downslope side. Thios is considered to be a probable prospecting or mining work, most likely dating to the 19th Century. [2]
