MEM22360 - Alford Terrace, Lynton (Building)

A prominent unlisted group on the hillside overlooking the town centre is Alford Terrace stepped gradually up the slope, and a mix of stone, painted stone and render dating from the early-mid 19th Century with symmetrical frontages and central door, typical of the period. The right hand pair have a blind central window. Most properties are unlisted in spite of the Local Plan designation “important feature/building – to be protected.” [1] Alford Terrace is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, apparently in its present form. Most of the buildings appear to have had outhouses abutting their northern garden walls. [2] The Tithe Map shows three properties, which appear to be the three most easterly properties and to share a garden. At the far east end, another building is shown, which may also still be extant as the end of the row at this location. However, the alignment of the two sets of properties does not appear to match.
