MEM22233 - Village lock-up, West Porlock (Building)

There in the yard [of the forge] is a little thatched building, where Mr Moggridge [the blacksmith] used to keep his cider; it was originally the village lock-up. Tradition has it, although there is no written record, that it was used by the village constable to lock up suspected rebels in the Monmouth rebellion pending transfer to Judge Jeffrey's assizes; also, later on, seaman captured from the French and Spanish privateers.
