Full Description
A turnpike stood at the top of Vicarage Hill in 1820, and probably later. Turnpike Cottage, at this location, was pulled down in the 1920s, and the remains now form part of the wall around Woodcote. [1] The turnpike through Dulverton fromed part of the original Minehead to Bampton turnpike, opened in 1765. Though a shorter route was opened in 1827, the Dulverton roads were not disturnpiked. Turnpike gates and cottages are shown on the 1790 map and Tithe Map at the junction of Vicarage Hill and Jury Road, and just to the north of Battleton House. [2-4]
