MEM15634 - Earthwork boundary Cloutsham Ball (Monument)

A possible earthwork boundary following the countours on the north facing slopes of Cloutsham Ball and featuring a terrace. It has been interpreted as a possible deer park pale, or as mining remains and associated access track.

A curvilinear earthwork boundary on the north facing slopes of Cloutsham Ball. The earthwork is approximately 200 metres long and follows the contour at 130 metres above Ordnance Datum. It is defined by a terrace circa 2 metres wide for much of its length, except where it terminates on the east of the hill it becomes a substantial earthwork boundary comprising a ditch 1.8 metres deep and 4 metres wide flanked by a downslope bank 0.5 metres high and up to 2.5 metres wide. The terrace fades out on the western side of the hill. It has been suggested this is the remains of a deer park pale but its short length may disagree with this interpretation.
