Full Description
A temporary incline, probably horse powered, used to transport ore from an adit sunk at Bearland Wood mine in circa 1864 to Langham Hill. [1] The course of the incline may correspond with a track depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 first edition map, between circa SS 97733567 and SS 97463593. It is described as being about 380 metres long and at a gradient of 1 in 4. The ore may have been hauled by a portable steam engine. [2] Sellick's book shows a plan of the incline. A horse whim was situated at the top. [3] Iron ore was removed from the mine by an incline constructed to convey it to the mine at Langham Hill and thence onto the West Somerset Mineral Railway. No trace of this incline now survives. [4-6] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7]
