Description

The site was subject to conservation repair in early November 2019. The site had been damaged by animal burrowing and sheep and cattle. 20 sheep/cattle scrapes and various animal burrows were filled with clean aggregate. The scrapes were cleaned and recorded prior to repair. The material making up the rampart was exposed in most of the scrapes and differed between scrapes. Up to 30 rabbit holes were identified and filled; these were concentrated along the eastern part of the outer rampart, where it is much lower and poorly preserved. It is possible the rampart here is mostly composed of predominantly soft rather than stony material. Many of the scrapes were fairly shallow and only one or two layers were visible, although in some other archaeological layers were visible. Soil samples were taken from the largest scrape, but no finds were recovered.
