Description
An archaeological evaluation undertaken at Burrow Farm, Wootton Courtenay, Somerset prior to alterations to the walled garden and the construction of a sand menage. A total of nine trenches each measuring 5 x 2 m, was stripped of topsoil by machine. No archaeological features were observed in four trenches. Trenches 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9 all contained archaeological deposits; it was decided that, following basic recording, the features visible in trenches 4, 8 and 9 required no further evaluation work as the proposed development of the site would not disturb or disrupt them.
Trench 1 included the possible footings of a wall, with pottery suggesting a terminus post quem of c. 18th Century date.
Trench 2 also contained possible wall footings but no dating evidence was recovered. This may be a continuation of the wall in Trench 1.
A linear feature in Trench 4 was not excavated as development was not expected to disturb it. It may have represented a field drain or possibly the footings of a wooden building. Trench 8 contained three linear features that contained no dateable artefacts. They may have been trenches for sleeper beams of wooden buildings.
Trench 9 contained two linear features, which had fills containing fragments of charcoal. They were not excavated but may represent the ditches of a field boundary.
