Description

The archaeological walkover survey of Codsend Moor was carried out over four days between the 23/03/09 and 30/03/09, in weather conditions that were occasionally cloudy with some rain, but for the most part fine. All of the drainage channels identified in the pre-survey preparatory analysis of aerial photographs – as well as those identified on the ground – were included within the walkover survey, and separate access routes were also defined and surveyed. Separate baling areas were not, however, defined and surveyed, given the relatively restricted areas of suitable vegetation and the archaeological sensitivity of the whole area. That said, the close-set drainage channels in the area centred on SS 877 408 did lead to a more comprehensive survey in that area, and could thus be utilised for baling. Most of the access routes defined follow existing farm tracks to minimise unncessary damage to virgin moorland; in some instances, however, this does take routes across archaeological features. Archaeological ‘buffer zones’ have not been defined but serious consideration should be given to excluding the southern half of both fields from any restoration work.
