over four days during late March (16-20/03/09) in weather conditions that were bright, clear and fine, following a relatively long period of fine weather. All of the identified drainage channels were included within the walkover survey, although the methodology employed was modified and separate access routes and baling areas were not defined. Undertaking the survey of this comprehensive and extensive 19th century drainage network meant that a substantial proportion of the area in question was subject to a walkover survey, and not just the 5m corridor either side of the drainage channels. The coarse vegetation cover (predominantly purple moor grass with soft rushes) and peat coverage made the location and identification of subtle features difficult or impossible (the recorded stone row at [SS73813822] (MSO6869) could not be located, for instance), and this raises some questions, but on the whole it seems likely that the low groundpressure machinery employed by the Mire Restoration Project will have a minimal impact, and a greater part of the surveyed area can safely be utilised for baling and access.
