Date
August 2009
Description
On the 7th of August 2009, postgraduate students Rebecca Pullen and Derwin Gregory of the University of Bristol's Department of Archaeology and Anthropology undertook a localised earth resistance survey using a sample interval of 1 metre across the remains of the small rectangular enclosure, located close to the Chapman Barrows on Challacombe Common in Exmoor National Park (centred at SS 7036 4321). As was expected, the upstanding remains of the enclosure showed up well as concentrations of high resistance readings. The geophysical plot broadly matched the existing earthwork survey undertaken by English Heritage (uid 1589826) which depicts the monument with upstanding banks or walls on three sides, but with the narrow southeast side essentially open ended with a scarp or terrace completing the rectangular form at this end. The results of the geophysical investigation were submitted in report form to the Exmoor National Park HER.
