Site Event/Activity record EEM14169 - 2007: HBA - Dovery Manor Museum

A report was commissioned to inform the potential insertion of a doorway between the upper museum and upper snooker rooms within Dovery Manor Museum. A brief site visit was undertaken and drawings of the wall produced based on architect drawings supplied by the museum. The extant building was thought to be built in at least six phases, possibly confused by major restoration work undertaken in the late 19th Century. The first phase was thought to date the late 16th Century or earlier, with a single storey open hall building (the Billiard Hall) with a central doorway in the north wall, possibly opening into a cross passage. A stair and chimney stack was later added and a two storey extension built to the north, with further extensions built later. The chimney was removed during the major 19th Century restoration. The report concluded that the doorway would break through a wall dating to the 16th Century or earlier; a door had been thought to exist previously in this location but only a blocked window was seen. It was therefore thought that this formed a wall separating two dwellings. [1]
