Description
Geoprospection of a survey area was commissioned by Exmoor National Park Authority and undertaken at Ruckham Coombe by Carey Consulting. The survey was undertaken as part of the Exmoor Mires Project and aimed to use shallow geoprospection techniques to evaluate archaeological remains before rewetting of the raised mire within the locality. The survey area is located on raised mire, which has a large spring mire with a deeply incised valley on its eastern edge.
The site is a possible artificial platform cut into the incised valley side, of unknown date or function. Consequently, the geophysical survey had a high potential to discover significant archaeological remains associated with the platform.
Both the earth resistance survey and the gradiometer survey produced high quality data sets. Both data sets had definable anomalies, some of which may be of archaeological origin; of greatest interest was a potential rectilinear structure within the centre of the survey area (MEM22635).
