Listed Building: LORNA DOONE FARM AT SS 7916 4775 (1289344)

BRENDON MALMSMEAD SS 74 NE 4/10 Lorna Doone Farm at SS 7916 - 4775 GV II Farmhouse, latterly 2 cottages, now house and shop. Probably early to mid C17, possibly a remodelling of an earlier house. Altered and extended in the C18, further enlarged in the late C19 and remodelled in the mid to late C20. Rendered, probably over coursed rubblestone. Rendered stacks, end stacks with offsets. Gable-ended C20 interlocking tile roof. C19 rear range of uncoursed rubble, partly rendered, with roof hipped to south. Plan and development: 3-room-and-cross-passage plan house, aligned approximately north-south, possibly a C17 remodelling of a medieval open hall house, but no positive evidence for this was noted at time of survey (July 1987). Lateral stack to rear of hall, integral lateral stack to front of service end at right, and former end stack to higher end at left. Possibly C18 addition to higher end with external end stack. Parallel late C19 addition at rear. Exterior: asymmetrical east front largely refenestrated in mid to late C20. 6 first floor 2-light C20 wooden casements. 3 large ground floor small-paned C20 shop windows to left with glazed door between first and second from left (entrance probably dating from time when house was 2 cottages). Small ground floor wooden casement to right with boarded door to its left, probably former cross passage entrance. Interior: all ground floor dividing walls removed, apart from between hall and service end. Hall with blocked fireplace and chamfered cross-beam with scroll stops. Chamfered cross beam to inner room with broach stops. Dividing wall between hall and inner room is known to have had a round-arched doorway with a pegged frame. Service end and first floor rooms not inspected. Roof also not inspected but possibly altered or rebuilt in the C20 (see sawn purlin-ends).
