Listed Building: LYNTON COTTAGE HOTEL (1201151)

LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH SS7149 NORTH WALK HILL, Lynton 858-1/4/44 (East side) 03/09/73 Lynton Cottage Hotel - GV II Hotel. Earliest range early C19, later C19 and C20 extensions. Rendered, slate roofs. The original range was a long narrow building, cut in on a platform on the rock, with a bold projecting wing to a bowed end to the right; across the whole front and round the bow was a low thatched verandah. A square pavilion was added to the left, and a complex new block to the right. In the late C20 a flat-roofed dining-room extension added, replacing the verandah, which has been completely removed (it appears in a c1907 photograph of the building). Picturesque neo-Tudor style. Mainly 2 storeys with some 3-storey work in the right wing. The centre range has 5 windows, all 2-light small-pane casements with stopped drip-courses at first floor, above the flat-roofed extension. In the last bay to the right are C20 entrance doors. The bow has 3 similar casements to the upper floor, and deep French doors with margin-pane glazing to the ground floor, opening to the terrace. There is a large casement dormer facing E, and a further casement and pair of French doors on the return. Beyond is a rambling wing in 3 storeys with many gables and varied fenestration, mainly 4-pane sashes, and a pair of early part-glazed doors in an elliptical carriage opening. This wing links to North Walk by a bridge at an upper level. The pavilion to the left has a pyramidal roof, and gablets to N and E over 2-light casements with drip-course as elsewhere. The ground floor has been modified, with a large brick-filled opening, and a blocked bay on the return, formerly covered by a glazed conservatory. There is a deep stack to the right of the bow, and the later wing has brick stacks in Tudor detail. INTERIOR: opposite the main entrance is a stair dividing at a quarter-landing, with stick balustrade and swept handrails, and a screen of 2 wide elliptical openings on 2 slender cast-iron columns. The long bow room to the right with frieze and cove cornice has a large white marble pilaster fireplace, with fine inset tiles; opposite this is an elliptical recess, and the door is in panelled reveals. A kitchen to the rear has a deep arched fire recess, and 2 small-pane casements, and a door with 6-pane overlight. The upper room of the end pavilion has a cast-iron Victorian grate, and a decorative truss of queen-post form with turned baluster struts.
