Listed Building: BRATTON COURT (1174996)

SS94NW MINEHEAD WITHOUT CP BRATTON 2/82 Bratton Court 22.5.69 - GV I Manor house, now farmhouse divided into 2 dwellings. C14 open hall, C15 solar hall, ceiled and enlarged C17, extensively altered late C19-early C20. Rendered over rubble, slate roofs, coped verges, large lateral stack to left of entrance, stone stack second bay right. T-plan, open hall house ceiled to 3 cell and cross passage lying north-south, solar wing set at right angles to east, extended west. Main block; 2 storeys, all C19 3-light casements, one window bay left of lateral stack, abutting gabled full height projection with one window, 2 window bays to right of entrance, 6-panelled raised and fielded door, rustic wooden porch. Set at right angles left solar wing, gable end masked by linhay (qv) on north front re-entrant angle, irregularly placed fenestration, first floor left 2-light trefoil headed mullioned window, pierced spandrels with foliage design visible on interior, lower mullions restored, C19 window right with cusped head, similar 2-light to right, ground floor left mullioned and transomed trefoil headed window similar end bay right. Rear elevation lateral stack with slate roofed bread oven projection, to left wing with 2-light ovolo moulded mullioned window, 2 stone stacks rising from eaves. Interior: main block extensively altered, remains of aisle post in wall to right of entrance, chamfered on one side and forming jamb of chamfered door frame to service end, now much altered. Unusual octagonal aisle post with splayed plinth, impost and 4 curved braces at south end, upper storey not seen, said to contain 7 pairs of arch braced collar beam trusses, smaoke blackened in roof space. Solar wing, ground floor featureless, first floor 3 pairs of jointed cruck trusses one fully arch braced with cusped wind braces, chamfered pointed arch opening in east gable end, unidentified opening to left, chamfered lintel to fireplace; previously known as the chapel, but in fact the solar.
