LYNTON AND LYNMOUTH SS7149 WATERSMEET ROAD, Lynmouth 858-1/4/90 (West side) 03/09/73 No.10 Bonnicott - GV II
Hotel. Early to mid C19 with C20 alterations. Rendered, fish-tail slate roof. Main range symmetrical with central gable of 3 stepped forward, entrance to the left and rear lateral staircase; 2 further gabled units set back to left, and large glazed conservatories with hipped roofs to front. At the rear is a parallel range with central valley gutter. The whole is set high above the road, cut into the rock-face at the rear, and with the N end gable wall curved to follow the line of Summerhouse Path which climbs past at this point. 2 storeys; 1+1+3 windows, all 2-light wood casements with mullion and transom, some late C20 replacement. The extensions with late C20 replacement glazing. To the left of the main range, on the set-back wing, a gabled porch with solid cheeks over a 4-vertical-panel door in a 4-centred head. All gables have decorative barge-boards with finials and drops, and there is a small stack to each gable-end of the main block. INTERIOR: the deep entrance lobby has an inner door with margin-panes and tinted glass, and this opens to an inner hall with the lateral stair with fine stick balustrade and swept handrail; there is a large 12-pane sash stair light. Many original 6-panel doors remain. Despite some substantial external modifications, this building still retains interior detail of architectural interest. The owners give a date of 1820 from the deeds. Like others in this road, it probably originated as a hotel.
