Welcome to the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record
This is the website for the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record (ENPHER). You can use this site to find information about archaeological sites, historic buildings, archaeological investigations and designations across the National Park area, and to find references to further sources of information about these datasets.
Information on the website should not be used for commercial purposes. Please contact us direct if you require data in support of a planning application or other development work, a countryside stewardship application, or a research project. Data searches are provided free of charge and ensure you receive up to date and complete HER data in a format convenient for you. The HER is undergoing a programme of improvement, with additional research data being inputted continuously and a data cleaning exercise being performed on our records, further information about which can be viewed on our Caveat page.
You can use the links above to perform a text search or map search of the Historic Environment Record or learn about more general themes using the Subjects library. Our Resources section provides information on documentation available from the HER and also external links to other websites of interest. Alternatively, if you need further assistance, have any queries about the data we hold or want to provide some information to the HER please use the online form to contact us, or you can telephone our offices on 01398 322273. We also welcome visits to our offices by appointment to view our collection of supporting documents. You can access records curated by other Historic Environment Records using the Heritage Gateway; in addition, you can follow the link to view the Somerset HER website (curated by the South West Heritage Trust) and Devon's Historic Environment Team's webpages.
Did You Know? Exmoor's HER data is now available via Know Your Place.
The information contained in the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record has been produced from various sources, a substantial part being compiled by both Devon and Somerset County Councils before being transferred to Exmoor National Park Authority in 2009. The Authority acknowledges the work carried out by both County Councils in establishing and maintaining the Historic Environment Records for the National Park.
